Constitution Day 2009 Poetry Contest Winners

The First Place prize went to Erik Rodriguez for his Constitution Day 2009 poem, "Our Turn" --

Our Turn: Preserving and Protecting Our Freedoms
by Erik Rodriguez

While tyranny ran rampant through a land in distress,
They rose from the ground and chose to stand strong
While injustice lingered despite the people protests
They chose to fight in battles far too long
And while we sit and enjoy the rights we now possess
It is our freedom that we own to their sense of right and wrong.

As decades drift by, the torch is passed from parent to child
With each generation protecting our forefather’s decree
Of our right to liberty and to live a life beguiled
But above all, preserve our right to be free.

A Second Place Prize went to Michelot Joseph for the poem--

Protecting and Preserving Our Freedom
by Michelo Joseph

Aye! Aye!
That is the scream of a great country
Being free
That is how we’re all made to be

No more barriers, no more slavery
We’re all free to talk and free to act
Male or female, white or black
The constitution gives us all liberality

Today, this is the land of opportunity
By the constitution, rich or poor live freely
Let’s protect each and everyone
To keep America the number One

Viva Freedom!

kindess
lucid, strong
in the
moment
like
sunlight
penetrating
a gloomy
glade

The offer
of empathy
or tea
or soup
or
bread
a bed.
