Our Turn: Preserving and Protecting Our Freedoms

While tyranny ran rampant through a land in distress,
They rose from the ground and chose to stand strong
While injustice lingered despite the people protests
They chose to fight in battles far too long
And while we sit and enjoy the rights we now possess
It is our freedom that we own to their sense of right and wrong.

As decades drift by, the torch is passed from parent to child
With each generation protecting our forefather’s decree
Of our right to liberty and to live a life beguiled

Angels & Demons Reading Circles in October

DeVry students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Summer Session B Reading Circles on the book and video, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown.

Videos covering the symbols in Angels and Demons will be shown on Wednesday, October 7 from 5-6pm in Library Conference Room #1.

A discussion of the book will be held on Thursday, October 8 from 5-6pm in the Library.

Copies of Angels & Demons are available for loan from DeVry South Florida Library.

Constitution Day 2009 @ DeVry South Florida--Poetry Contest & Program

On Thursday, September 17 from 5-6pm in the Library, a panel of service providers will present on the topic, "Protecting and Preserving Our Freedoms."

Miramar Branch Library, the League of Women Voters Broward County, and DeVry Veterans Affairs Office will identify the services available that support our constitutional rights and responsibilities. This event is co-sponsored by Student Central and the Library to celebrate Constitution Day 2009.

A poetry contest is also featured as part of Constitution Day 2009 activities. Write a 10-line poem on the topic, Protecting and Preserving Our Freedoms, and have your poem judged by a panel of faculty and staff. Deadline for submission of your original poem is Friday, Septmeber 11. First place poem receives a Best Buy $50 gift certificate. Second place poem receives a Barnes and Noble $25 gift certificate.

Mountains Beyond Mountains, the story of Dr. Paul Farmer and his medical work serving the poor of Haiti, is the DeVry Reading Circles book selection for Summer Session A.

A video about Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health will be shown on Wednesday, July 22 from 5-6pm in the Library. A discussion of Mountains Beyond Mountains is scheduled for Thursday, July 23 from 5-6pm in Library Conference Room #1.

Power Etiquette Workshop on June 17th

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch on May 20 and 21

Before his premature death at the age of 47 in 2008, Professor Randy Pausch realized his childhood dreams and accomplished groundbreaking achievements in the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. In his lecture and book, The Last Lecture, Professor Pausch describes how he overcame obstacles to work smart, manage his time, and live life to the fullest.

National Library Week 2009 Features Dr. Seuss on Leadership

The Case for Christ Reading Circle Program on February 4 & 5

The Library and TLC announce a new Reading Circle program for February 2009--

The Case for Christ. This book, written by Lee Strobel an investigational reporter with the Chicago Tribune, raises questions about the life and death of Jesus as reported in the Bible. Mr. Strobel interviews a number of scholars and experts in theology and Biblical archaeology to address a number of issues.

Librarian Lucy Osemota will facilitate the Film Showing on Wednesday, February 4 from 4:45-5pm (70 min. running time) and the Book Discussion on Thursday, February 5 from 5-6pm. Both sessions will be held in Library Conference Room #1.

A free book raffle of The Case for Faith (Visual Edition) by Lee Strobel will be held. The drawing is scheduled for Thursday, February 5.

Hispanic Heritage Month Essays Due by October 10

DeVry South Florida students are invited to submit Hispanic Heritage Month essays on the topic, "How have Hispanic Americans achieved the American Dream?"

Essays of a maximum of 500 words (4 paragraphs) are due by Friday, October 10 to Dr. Mary Howrey by e-mail-- mhowrey@devry.edu

Students who are judged to have written the top three essays will receive $25 gift certificates.

Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Featured Book

Poet and author Maya Angelou's autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is the common reading for Summer Session A on August 6 and 7. The book discussion is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6 from 5-6pm in Library Conference Room #1. Two film showings are scheduled for Thursday, August 7. The first showing is from 1-3pm, and the second showing runs from 4-6pm.

Is Global Warming a Threat? Attend the Debate on February 7

DeVry students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the global warming debate scheduled for Thursday, February 7 from 5-6pm in Room 137 across from the Library and Learning Center.

Professor Bob O'Connell is the debate judge. Thomas Mayer, Christian Fossa-Andersen, Adam Moss and Dr. Mary Howrey will lead two student debate teams in exploring the pros and cons of the global warming issue.

AIT Reading Circles Events the Week of December 3

Faculty, staff and students will be reading the book, An Inconvenient Truth (AIT), by former Vice President and 2007 Nobel Prize winnerAl Gore during Fall Semester 2007-2008. A book discussion is planned for Monday, December 3 from 5-6pm in Library Conference Room #1.

Film showings are scheduled for Wednesday, December 4 from 4-6pm and Thursday, December 5 from 1-3pm in the Library. In addition to the book discussion and film showings, a debate on "Is global warming a threat to our planet?" is planned for Thursday, January 24, 2008 from 5-6pm in the Library.

Multiple copies of AIT are available for loan from the Library. Follett Bookstore also has copies available for sale at $21.95 each. Two copies of the Academy Award winning documentary are available for one-week loan.
