Breast Cancer Awareness Reading Circles October 12 and 13

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and DeVry's Library is supporting the "Race for the Cure" through our Chamberlain College of Nursing and the Susan G. Komen Foundation http://ww5.komen.org/. Reading Circles are scheduled in the DeVry South Florida Library on Wednesday, October 12 and Thursday, October 13 from 5-6pm.

Reading Circles participants will be reading excerpts from Barbara Delinsky's book,
Uplift: Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors (2011). Amazon.com states that--Uplift is an inspiring collection of inspirational snippets from more than 300 breast cancer survivors who share breast cancer tips and experiences. Reading this book is like listening to the friendly hubbub of a crowd of women all offering advice and comments. It's similar to joining a support group.

The Library and University Centers in Fort Lauderdale and Miami will also serve as drop-off points for the donations to our troops.

National Library Week 2011 Open House

This I Believe Reading Circles and Essays October 2010

Hi, DeVry South Florida Students and Staff--

Did you have a chance to read the current Reading Circle selection for Summer Session B? The Library has copies available of This I Believe I and This I Believe II which contain essays written by celebrities about the core values that govern their daily lives.

In conjunction with the Reading Circles events, the Library Committee sponsored an essay writing contest by students and staff.

The Library received 9 essays in two divisions---one division for DeVry South Florida students and one division for staff. A team of judges from the DeVry University South Florida faculty rated the essays submitted. Thanks to Dr. Jerry Durbeej, Dr. Sarah Nielsen and Professor Esther Rachelson for their assistance with the essay judging.

The winning student essays were submitted by Itzel Rivero, Carl McKever, Melissa Mangal, and Christopher Finnegan.

The winning staff essays were submitted by Esther Rachelson, Silvia Sauve and Stephen Mitchell.

I Can Live a Normal Life with Diabetes

June 15, 2010 is a day I will never forget. It was the day I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Four months ago, if you would’ve asked me what a keytone was, I would’ve said “something on a piano”. Like most, I thought diabetes was something that only affected children or overweight people. I was completely oblivious to what this disease was, or what it was like to live with it.

The symptoms were subtle. It’s amazing how easily you adapt to them. I honestly didn’t think drinking 12-14 bottles of water a day was odd. I lost 18 pounds in about a month, nothing wrong with that during bikini season. Waking up several times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom became routine. Being exhausted all the time to me just seemed like a symptom of too much work and school. It wasn’t until a routine trip to the gynecologist, that I discovered that I was a cupcake away from going into a diabetic coma.

After the shock wore off, I went back and forth from being angry to in denial. I kept wondering, “why me?” Confused, brokenhearted, and depressed, I had no choice but to accept the awful truth. With the help of my friends, family and the educators at the diabetic care center, I began to feel hope. Instead of asking, “why me?” I started asking, “why not me?”

I became veracious for information. I read blogs, visited websites, bought books, and spoke with other people living with diabetes. I learned how to count carbs, fancy diabetic terms like DKA, A1C, and LADA. I discovered new and delicious foods low in sugar and carbohydrates. I can’t say it wasn’t difficult at first. Having to completely restructure how you look at food and inject insulin 8 times a day is easier said than done. However, armed with information and medicine, I battled this disease and won! With the help of my doctor and pump therapy I was able to get my glucose levels under control.

I’ve come a long way, but this is just the beginning. I hope to share my story with others who were recently diagnosed. Becoming a diabetic later in life can be harder than having it since adolescence. If I can help bring hope and information to just one other person in my situation, then I have done my job, because I believe that I can make a difference. I believe that there will someday be a cure, and most of all I believe that I can live a normal life with diabetes.

I Believe in Correct Punctuation

I believe in periods, commas, apostrophes, semi-colons, and I even believe in ellipsis. I believe that letting my reader know more of how I think is important to getting my message across the first time around. I want my reader to understand I have finished this sentence and I am beginning the next one. I want my reader to know if I might be excited or in need to shout (using an exclamation point) or if I am wondering or in need of some information (using a question mark). I believe it is important for my reader to breathe every once in awhile when I provide a list or to understand additional material that enhances the reading but may not be essential such as my best friend, Rosie, has two very intelligent daughters. I believe presenting myself in the most credible manner by using correction punctuation makes be a better candidate for that job, promotion, or prize. The correct use of a colon might show my next employer that I actually paid attention in composition class. I might impress my boss with my winning technique of using dashes or ellipses that she couldn’t help but think promotion. I might write a winning essay because I was able to express my beliefs not only with words but with little black marks that help the reader comprehend my meaning. I believe in brackets and parenthesis because I speak with a lot of asides and my writing reflects my speaking. I believe in possession so I want to be able to use the apostrophe correctly—it’s mine. If I feel the need to quote someone else’s words, I can do that with quotation marks (and an in-text citation so I don’t get caught plagiarizing). I know I can emphasize my writing with the proper use of a colon or even add dialogue with the same key stroke. I believe in correct punctuation.

Trudy Evans, human resources consultant, executive coach and owner of The Raven Group Inc., led the June 3 Reading Circles program at DeVry University Library.

There were 11 participants who discussed two books, The Outliers and Inside Steve's Brain. Professors Chris Fossa-Andersen, Ed Hill, Esther Rachelson, and Kelly Adams shared their thoughts about the book and the role of nature vs. nurture in contributing to success in school and business.

Local author and educator, Dan Zachofsky, discussed a number of his books that contain interviews with major league baseball players about spring training and post-season play--Idols of the Spring and October Baseball--the Library's National Library Week 2010 celebration on Tuesday, April 13. Members of the DeVry South Florida Skyhawks softball team coached by professors Tom Guarino and Bob O'Connell were in attendance at the National Library Week program.

Holiday Short Story Reading Circle on December 8, 2009

Over 20 students, faculty and staff participated in the Holiday Short Story Readings program on December 8. Professor Robert O'Connell, Dr. Mary Howrey, Alvin Eze and Doris Arce read short stories about Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year's.

Two Christmas teddy bears, dressed up as Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa Claus, were auctioned off to students in attendance. Winners of the raffle prizes were--Arnold Cruickshank, Jr. and Floresdilla Martinez.

Miramar Branch Library, the League of Women Voters Broward County, and DeVry Veterans Affairs Office will identify the services available that support our constitutional rights and responsibilities. This event is co-sponsored by Student Central and the Library to celebrate Constitution Day 2009.

A poetry contest is also featured as part of Constitution Day 2009 activities. Write a 10-line poem on the topic, Protecting and Preserving Our Freedoms, and have your poem judged by a panel of faculty and staff. Deadline for submission of your original poem is Friday, Septmeber 11. First place poem receives a Best Buy $50 gift certificate. Second place poem receives a Barnes and Noble $25 gift certificate.

The Case for Christ. This book, written by Lee Strobel an investigational reporter with the Chicago Tribune, raises questions about the life and death of Jesus as reported in the Bible. Mr. Strobel interviews a number of scholars and experts in theology and Biblical archaeology to address a number of issues.

Poet and author Maya Angelou's autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is the common reading for Summer Session A on August 6 and 7. Is Global Warming a Threat? Attend the Debate on February 7

DeVry students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the global warming debate scheduled for Thursday, February 7 from 5-6pm in Room 137 across from the Library and Learning Center.

Professor Bob O'Connell is the debate judge. Thomas Mayer, Christian Fossa-Andersen, Adam Moss and Dr. Mary Howrey will lead two student debate teams in exploring the pros and cons of the global warming issue.

AIT Reading Circles Events the Week of December 3

Faculty, staff and students will be reading the book, An Inconvenient Truth (AIT), by former Vice President and 2007 Nobel Prize winnerAl Gore during Fall Semester 2007-2008. A book discussion is planned for Monday, December 3 from 5-6pm in Library Conference Room #1.

Film showings are scheduled for Wednesday, December 4 from 4-6pm and Thursday, December 5 from 1-3pm in the Library. In addition to the book discussion and film showings, a debate on "Is global warming a threat to our planet?" is planned for Thursday, January 24, 2008 from 5-6pm in the Library.

Multiple copies of AIT are available for loan from the Library. Follett Bookstore also has copies available for sale at $21.95 each. Two copies of the Academy Award winning documentary are available for one-week loan.

Faculty members of the Library Committee selected the book, Freedom Writers Diary, for the Summer 2007 Reading Circles program. The Library has copies of the book available for loan, and copies of the paperback are available for purchase from the Follett Bookstore.

English teacher Erin Gruwell encouraged her high school students to achieve through writing and learning the true meaning of diversity and acceptance. The book explains how a teacher and 150 teens used writing to change themselves and the world around them.
